ABOUT F HOWKINS AND SON
Mike was born next door to the existing garage (at the old Post Office which is now next door to the White Lion’s restaurant area) in 1944. His parents, Frank and Vera, ran the local PO which has new been in the family for over 150 years.
The Howkins family moved 50 yards to the present premises in 1950 and ran the Post Office and Garage business from there. Mike served his apprenticeship as a motor vehicle mechanic at Rugby Autocar.
When Frank sadly passed away in 1973, Mike took over the running of the garage, petrol station and acted as sub-postmaster, alongside his mother. He was also a member of the Church PCC. He also did taxi runs, delivered mail and newspapers to outlying farms, collected the farmers’ children so that they could catch the school bus or attend the village school and delivered them safely back home in the afternoons. Those children now have families of their own and are loyal customers to this day.
1987 saw major demolition and redevelopment at the garage which lasted 4 long months. Investment in technology has continued, including electronic tank monitoring, vehicle-recognition monitoring on the forecourt, remote surveillance, computerised MOT Testing and vehicle diagnostics, an extensive range of interceptors and more recently the replacement of petrol pumps with the latest Gilbarco SK100’s, including a super High Speed, designated HGV Diesel Pump offering fill points on either side. Low energy LED lighting and a new modern and bright pole sign contribute to energy savings.
Our long serving members of staff continue to enjoy offering a personalised and caring service to our valued customers, both existing and new.
