Mike was born next door to the existing garage (at the old Post Office which is now next door to the White Lion’s restaurant area) in 1944. His parents, Frank and Vera, ran the local PO which has new been in the family for over 150 years.

The Howkins family moved 50 yards to the present premises in 1950 and ran the Post Office and Garage business from there. Mike served his apprenticeship as a motor vehicle mechanic at Rugby Autocar.

When Frank sadly passed away in 1973, Mike took over the running of the garage, petrol station and acted as sub-postmaster, alongside his mother. He was also a member of the Church PCC. He also did taxi runs, delivered mail and newspapers to outlying farms, collected the farmers’ children so that they could catch the school bus or attend the village school and delivered them safely back home in the afternoons. Those children now have families of their own and are loyal customers to this day.

1987 saw major demolition and redevelopment at the garage which lasted 4 long months. Converting from attended service to self service pumps with new shop, tanks, and pumps there was an element of nostalgia and sadness as the face of his father’s garage changed in order to keep up with the times. Mike and Gill still miss, to this day, the more personalized and friendly contact with customers which they and their staff used to enjoy when serving the customers at the pumps in all weathers.
